Every body wants to look and feel young these days. Going by the very famous quote “You are what you eat” If you eat fresh food you will be and look fresh. If you eat food that has been around, I mean around the factory or too much around the heat you will look like someone who’s been on a very tiring journey!

Is everyone ready to go through the hard work and discipline it takes to keep young and healthy? I will be highlighting 10 top anti aging foods in this post.

The anti aging process

The anti aging process is about slowing down the rate at which the human body grows old. Everybody wants to age gracefully, age with an air of grace around you.

As we grow older the wear and tear of the years seem to tell and show on the human body. How we age and the speed at which we age depends on what we have been feeding the body with and how we have been using the body over the years.

Anti aging foods are mainly antioxidant foods and anti inflammatory foods.

Antioxidant foods are rich in vitamin C, vitamin E and Carotene. Foods with these nutrients protect the body cells from free radicals.

Yam and vegetable
Yam and Vegetable

Yam with dark green vegetables – Boil yam with it’s skin to maximize nurient intake. Cook vegetables in very little olive oil, tomatos and crushed garlic. (Vegetables are cooked without water). Add spices of your choice to give it flavour. Serve boiled yam with the vegetable stew.

Garlic in Tomato and fish Stew – blend tomatos, bell pepper, scotch bonnet pepper, onions and garlic into a paste. Add salt and spices of your choice and boil for about 30 minutes. Add mackerel fish to the paste and cook till fish is soft. You won’t need to add any oil to this Stew, the oil in the fish is all it needs.

Yam with Fish Stew – serve boiled yam with the above Tomato Stew.

Yam porridge  – my style is to cook 1 and 1/2 inch cubes of yam in vegetables and tomato sauce with some spices to give it a delicious flavour.

  1. I really liked reading your article. I ended up informed on foods that I already know something about, but certainly not on how they play into an African diet, especially how the foods you mention can affect the aging process. The aging process is something that I’m hoping to slow down, if at all possible; even stop, if I can! 😉  I like the lemon drink suggestion; reminds me of something I got when I was a kid, only there was some tea in the cup, as well, and sometime a shot of whiskey, which is what we sometimes used to knock out a cold (my folks called it a hot toddy!). Thanks for your post. Looking forward to seeing more.

  2. I didn’t expect sweet potatoes to be on this list, but the rest of the foods here, I can vouch for. There were several times in my life where I did a master cleanse involving drinking tons of lemon water mixed with syrup and cayenne pepper.

I lost A LOT of weight and my skin cleared up, and this was all in a matter of days mind you. After I hit 30, I began to start looking at what I can do to maintain my youth and this list certainly helps, thanks!

  3. Hello and very interesting Top Ten post! Anti-aging foods are on the rise, as most people are becoming more aware of the adverse affects of unhealthy foods. I actually love all the foods on your list, as they are rich in vitamins and nutrients to maintain a healthy diet. Anti-aging foods are an essential part of—life! I’m definitely going to try your recipes and the lemon drink with honey!

  4. This is a great list and matches what I have been eating while on a Paleo Diet. I use olive oil in place of butter and my body feels so much better.

I didn’t know there was much of a difference between sweet potatoes and yams. I mosty use sweet potatoes but will start alternating with yams.

One question is does salmon and other fish provide the same benefits as mackerel or are there differences?

    1. Thanks Michael,

For coming by and for your kind comment.

Yes, salmon fish has omega oils as well and can be used the same way as Mackerel fish.
